Conclusion

Below are the original outcomes which Kathryn had set out to complete and her explanation on how they were met.

  • Research and study the fundamentals of cinematography

Research was conducted into films such as The Bucket List and tv shows like 666 Park Avenue. Kathryn looked into the 5 c's of cinematography and incorporated this into her shot film. Using techniques like the rule of thirds and the types of shots such as medium shots. She researched into the Kuleshov effect and how this can effect the way that people can perceive a film.

If the project was approached again, Kathryn would have explored more in depth the ways in which colours can effect the audience and how the effect of shutter speed can change a film as there were errors through the film from this knowledge being unknown, she would have also done research into a wider range of shows as there was more to be learnt by looking into the composition of films from the genre.

Researching into cinematography it was found that each cinematographer has their own style. Overall it has shown that Kathryn adopted her own style in the task using a variety of shots from extreme close ups to long shots.
  • Apply this research to some experiments

After the cinematographer had researched into other cinematographers and the rules of cinematography Kathryn applied it to her work through using the three point lighting style and composition rules which are outlined in the 5 C's of Cinematography.

Kathryn also used lighting tests and applied this and the lessons she learnt from the test to achieve a higher level of image in the final piece, this has also taught her the importance in having tests before shooting the final piece.
  • Analyse the results for their strengths and weaknesses

  • Strengths
  • The film is well composed for the majority of the shots and the composition follows the guidelines of the different types of shots. There was also a wealth of footage and all the shoots were done in a professional manner. It was ensured that the schedule was adhered to unless it there was sufficient reason to take longer and there was a contingency of shooting on the 6th of December. It was well planned to ensure that the film could be made to a high standard.

There was a real comrade feel between the team. All of the group pulled together well and this made the project stronger and made the work calmer. This attributed to the project being a success in the eyes of Kathryn.
  • Weaknesses
  • The amount of noise throughout the film brings the quality of the footage down, this was mainly caused by gain being turned on, this has been noted. The colour effect which occurred on the final day of filming was caused by fluorescent and tungsten lighting effecting each other. Kathryn has learnt about the effect this had on the film. There were issues with the sound as some files went missing in the edit which effected the end result, this was due to the way the edirol saved the files. The entire team learnt from this.

  • Shoot a short film and analyse the outcomes of the cinematography

The team produced a 5 minute drama, following a script written by Kevin Li, which they had doctored, together they found actors, locations and efficiently shot a film. There were several problems outlined earlier but overall it was a successful project.
